When my kids were little, I was never very good at getting down on the floor and playing cars and other games for long. But I was good at building car washes with bins of water and shaving cream, or creating elaborate roadways on the floor with masking tape – and I enjoyed it too!
“I am terrible at playing with my kids,” I once sadly confessed to a teacher friend. “But, Katie” she said, “you are very good at facilitating play.” That is exactly how I now see creating punch needle rug hooking patterns – I am facilitating play.
Patterns are just an outline, a starting place for your creative choices. Just as I encouraged my children to explore their own ideas and create their own stories with those whimsical roadways, these patterns offer a playground for your artistic expression, where every loop and colour choice becomes a personal decision in the process of crafting something truly one-of-a-kind.
I created the pattern “Hoo’s Out There” just prior to our move. It seems like a fitting pattern for the season. It’s a nesting time of year, where we burrow together in the safety of our homes away from the cold and dark. We’re doing a little nesting here as well, surrounding ourselves with traditions and familiar objects that remind us of home.
I hope you have fun playing with November’s pattern, just as much I enjoyed creating it. You can download it here. I can’t wait to see what you make!
